Sunflower Season is here!

Sunflower Season is here!

Sunflowers are hands down one of our FAVORITE flowers! (We added a picture of our designer, Haley, as a wee lass, showing off how big her homegrown sunflowers were. How cute!)

So as you can see, our love of these amazing flowers runs deep.

Native to North and South America, Sunflowers were cultivated by Indigenous people's as a food source. Thank goodness too. What would we do without dill pickle sunflower seeds? Pass away probably.

Sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning the blooms or the heads, track the sun. There are 70 known species of sunflower recorded today. One of our favorite varietes is the teddy bear sunflower, aptly named because they are fuzzy just like bears!

Fun fact, North Dakota grows 1.3 Billion pounds of sunflowers EVERY YEAR. We'd love to see that. Brb, going to go run through the biggest sunflower field we've ever seen. If the shop is closed that is probably why. (JK Brenda you didn't see anything)

Sunflowers typically bloom starting in August, and bloom through late September, making this the perfect time of year to source sunflowers. They will be the freshest and biggest by the end of August and the first bit of September. Farm grown sunflowers are available year round, but for outdoor grown sunflowers (which are always the nicest) now is the time to source.

When buying sunflowers, always shop small business! To keep your sunflowers looking fresh for as long as possible, make sure to give them an angled cut before putting them in water. Change your water every two days, and to keep your sunflowers standing tall, place them away from vents, appliances and electronics and out of direct sunlight so they don't burn. Pro tip- instead of flower flood, add a teaspoon of white vinegar to your vase to help keep your sunflowers fresh!
